This piece explores some of the everyday, banal rituals we take for granted. During multiple lockdowns and isolation, our population was suddenly denied experiences that we were accustomed to, such as international travel, seeing family and friends, going to massive concerts. We had to live our lives like running through a checklist, creating meaning through daily activities. It was through these banal tasks, such as washing your face, brushing your teeth, combing your hair, that we found solace. They grounded us in these ‘unprecedented times’. In my artwork I pursue a type of gratification through rituals, beautifying them in ways we associate with our ‘normal’ extraordinary experiences.
