Modernist Montage

Indianna Fox

Year 9
School: Applecross Senior High School
Medium: Ball point pen on paper

Artist statement: The challenge was to create a montage of something human, something mechanical and something botanical. Almost like automatic drawing, a practice favoured by the Surrealists who inspired this work, it makes us wonder what is really going on in the artist’s mind. The meaning of the symbols: the padlock and key in its lock, skeletal rib cage with viny leaves sneaking out from behind, a vintage typewriter falling away onto a bed of sunflowers. This piece challenges the viewer to create meaning out of chaos. What does it all mean? How do I interpret this piece? Thoughts about life and death over duty and being bound up, and how they relate to the viewer, can occur when examining its symbolism.
