Artist statement: The idea behind this design was to encourage women to speak out against sexual harassment by using shock tactics (through use of statistics) and a highly symbolic image to represent what it is to be a woman. The image was photographed, traced and then displaced to disrupt the ‘male gaze’ used in traditional magazine covers. The cutting of the main image also evokes an emotional response as the slicing up of the images treats the subjects as objects, much like our male-dominated society has treated women. The typography is eye-catching and bold to promote a call to action for women everywhere to reach out and speak up about their experiences.
