Artist statement: I wanted to create an aesthetically pleasing still-life while ensuring my sister’s image was at its centre. Julie Dowling’s realistic painting style, in which she achieves a smooth, skin-like texture, heavily influenced how I painted my sister’s face, hair and hands. I worked in thin layers of oil paint, adding detail, colour and shading until I was satisfied. Zoe Young’s still-life work also inspired my style, particularly when painting the simpler background objects and overall colour scheme. I managed to capture my sister’s beauty effectively in oil paint – they allowed me to accurately express her smiley disposition and the brightness in her eyes.
