Artist statement: The inspiration for my work “Ziggy Stardust”, is David Bowie. The idea for this piece was to create a garment that does not to conform to gender stereotypes. My primary influence for this piece was Alexander McQueen’s Union Jack coat, personally designed for David Bowie in 1996. Bowie’s androgynous transformations brought about seismic cultural shifts, changing the definition of what it meant to be a popular rock star and a man. Bowie’s clothes were his way of projecting self-expression and a powerful tool in communicating individuality at its most extreme; unique and creative. I share the original designer’s views and recreated my garment using the Australian flag as a ‘play’ on his use of the Union Jack.
