I developed my ideas for this artwork inspired by Kehinde Wiley’s realistic portraits, contrasting them with the symbolic patterns in the background. The subject matter of my artwork is my Oma, a strong-willed woman who has experienced many life changing experiences. I admire her in many ways, and she has encouraged and shaped me into a strong, independent woman. The tulips in the background hold significant meaning, representing the native flowers from Oma’s country of origin, Holland and the colour, orange, also holds personal significance for my Oma.
