Artist statement: The phrase ‘head under water ‘usually means a person is drowning in emotions. I wanted to portray a person with a calm exterior, yet violent emotions in their soul. Women, in my view, often have a strong outward appearance, but in their head they’re bursting with emotions. This is shown in my work through the crashing waves and thus the woman appears to be drowning in her emotions. I chose dark blue to connote calmness, contrasting this with the violent waves. The medium I chose for Head Under Water is oil paint. I wanted to work slowly and have time to blend out my brushstrokes to create a sense of softness.
