Artist statement: This portrait has heavy, textured strokes representing my brother’s rough intimidating exterior. However,it also reveals his soft and caring personality when you get to know him. The rough strokes contrast with the light, pale hues that were used to create 3D form in the piece. I used crimson for the shirt and warm colours in his face to make a bold silhouette in front of the pale blue background. This created unity throughout the work. The highlights on the face created form and interest.
