Artist statement: My painting addresses the social issue of homelessness. People ignore the homeless, and the government relocates them instead of providing aid, so that the location looks ‘clean’. It is as if we are treating them as part of the environment, instead of struggling people in need.
I have painted a homeless man sitting down against a street wall. It draws inspiration from the works of the street artist Banksy. His face is stenciled like Banksy’s works, but slowly morphs into a realistic 3D form. The man is being painted over with blue paint like he is part of the wall. I covered the canvas in sand to simulate the textured surface of a concrete street wall. Acrylic paint was used to develop realism and details.”
