Artist statement: My artwork, ‘Family Portrait’, aims to question childhood in the age of the internet and social media. My lino print depicts the potential suffocation of independence that surveillance technology imposes on society. The parents on either side of the figure in the composition are represented as security cameras, looming over the child. My artwork provides commentary on the contemporary debate regarding children’s privacy, and the result of excessive parental controls. The use of interlocking line work melds the figures together, symbolising a lack of separation and therefore freedom.
