Spirit of Perth

Medium: Mixed media textile drawing
Artist statement: Spirit of Perth is a textile illustration. I used appliqué, machine embroidery and hand embroidery. As a part of my process I photographed the city and then planned the composition back in the studio. The ‘frankensteined’ landscape includes various locations in the Perth region that are important to my life. The hills in the distance represent my home. I have included the Transperth train station, the art gallery of Western Australia and the three iconic skyscrapers that make up part of Perth’s city skyline. Other landmarks include the James Angus statue, the Elizabeth Quay ripple sculpture by Christian de Vietri and the Swan Brewery. The girl on the balcony represents me. I have included types of people I see regularly such as joggers, youths, couples and the elderly. I have also depicted people fighting, busking, working, exercising and using modes of transport. My style is influenced partly by Sidney Nolan and Jenny Watson, but mostly by Grayson Perry. I credit my process and admiration of textile works to him.
