Creation!?

Artist statement: Humans have impacted on our world’s surface for thousands of years but never as much as today. Our unstainable practices have resulted in negative consequences, including the extinction of many of our animal and plant species. In my piece I have appropriated Michelangelo’s Creation of Man with a profile of an endangered white rhino. There is a symbolic tension that is created between God’s finger and the point of the imposing rhino horn. But rather than using the creation theme in Michelangelo’s famous work, my piece reflects the destruction of the planet and its environment. Greed and unsustainable activity have resulted in the disappearance of so many of our animals and plants – what a terrible loss.
