Artist statement: My work, ‘6th Avenue on 52nd Street’ explores the Japanese concept of Ma (間) which can be described as a pause in time, an interval of emptiness or stillness; it’s an insight into a moment without chaos or action, just lingering idleness. My work is a snapshot of the bustling streets of New York, and focuses on the stranger with a pink umbrella. My piece explores the question of whether you are actually important in the grand scheme of things, and if you will actually be remembered or have significance in the world; the idea of leaving a imprint on society. It was created on a 560x560mm canvas which I sanded down and coated in gesso three times to achieve a smooth texture.
