This is a portrait of myself. The reference image was taken at the start of 2025 during my trip overseas to Shanghai, taken at a photo studio. Being half Shanghainese, the trip was to introduce me to my father’s cultural heritage back in China. I was born in Australia, and I have always felt like an outcast in my heritage. This portrait aims to celebrate my Chinese heritage by depicting a photograph in traditional Chinese clothing, aiming to show viewers that cultural heritage is not defined by the environment one is brought up in, but the culture they choose to resonate with.
