The portrait emphasises the contrasts between the artist’s grandmother’s weathered hands, marked by prominent veins, and their infant nephew’s smooth, delicate hand. Her hand symbolises a living testament to a lifetime of labour and sacrifices she made so that they may live a privileged and comfortable life, with opportunities she may not have had herself. The infant’s grasp symbolises the security, love, and guidance she has given them throughout their life. While also reflecting the deep bond they share and an eternal sense of gratitude for the foundation she paved the way for, all of which forms a legacy that continues to nurture long after the work itself has gone unseen.
