My artwork explores the pressures that school can place on young people and the desire to escape from them. The painting depicts a girl lying on a bathroom floor, a position that suggests feelings of overwhelm, exhaustion and emotional strain. In contrast, the reflection of a bright blue sky in the mirror symbolises freedom, hope and the possibility of life beyond these pressures.

This work was inspired by my own experiences of school-related stress and anxiety, as well as the expectations that many students feel compelled to meet. Through this artwork, I hope viewers gain a deeper understanding of the emotional impact these pressures can have on young people and encourage reflection on the importance of supporting student wellbeing.

I was influenced by artists who explore personal emotions and psychological experiences through painting. Using oil paints, I focused on colour blending, shading and highlighting to create smooth transitions and create depth throughout the composition.

One of the main challenges was developing a strong composition and ensuring the placement of the figure effectively guided the viewer’s eye towards the focal point. Creating convincing perspective within the room was also a complex and time-consuming process. To achieve subtle tonal transitions and a realistic finish, I used soft-bristle brushes and finger-blending techniques.
