My artwork depicts three Japanese scientists from Unit 731 during WWII, who are transporting a Chinese civilian’s body. It highlights the brutal experiments and atrocities committed by Unit 731, a covert biological and chemical warfare unit of the Imperial Japanese Army. The piece confronts viewers with wartime horrors, emphasising human suffering caused by inhumane scientific endeavours. Heavy black tones and sharply outlined faces evoke empathy and reflection, urging remembrance and a commitment to preventing such horrors. Unit 731’s experiments broke ethical barriers, treating subjects as expendable ‘logs’ and enabling extreme cruelty. This artwork aims to shed light on these events and honour the victims.
