Charcoal on paper

My goal was to develop a self-portrait with charcoal, focusing on tone and following drawing traditions.
I drew the guidelines with charcoal pencil for more accurate placings of features. I then worked on the proportions such as the size of the face compared to the neck. Before adding tones to the face, I shaded the coat and hair. I laid down the darkest tones on the face first, then defined the features using an eraser to add highlights on the cheek, forehead and nose. I am happy with the resulting work as it looks like me – but a more dramatic version.
