Just a Flower

‘Just a Flower’ is my comment on the dehumanising Western perception of East Asian women. I want to establish the alienation and otherness I feel in Australia. Western media representations sparked my increasing frustration at this ‘exotic’ and ‘ornamental’ stereotype being imposed. The process of the flowers wilting and the evolving expressions on the faces are symbolic of these harmful Western perceptions being eroded away. The traditional tea set holds a dual meaning: heritage but also domesticity.

I want to decolonise representations of East Asian women and comment on an issue that has influenced my racial identity immensely.
